Nico seems like a great kid, so I don't hate him being named Captain. I just would have preferred someone like Palmeri, Zajac or Subban; even assuming that it would just be for the short term.
I look at the C like the last contract we gave him. Hope he grows into it....
The 'C' probably doesn't mean as much as it use to (unless you are talking about the one for my ex-wife) but that doesn't mean it's not important. And if have a legit great leader on your team they can make some difference. I suspect most aren't that important. It's still an honor and I think it does mean a lot to the players who get a letter. |

I agree with the sentiment that it could mean less than in the past, but I certainly don't think it's just a formality. It's true that captains have gotten younger and younger, but there have been some pretty rare circumstances (extraordinary players) that have made that the case.
Crosby, Landeskog, and McDavid stand out as being "recent" extremely young captains. Clearly the outlier of the three there is Landeskog in terms of point production (he did put up 75 in '19) but Landeskog was seemingly 'destined' to be an NHL captain according to nearly everybody who had been around him leading up to the draft.
Nico, I think, is more relatable to when the Kings named Dustin Brown their captain at 23. Not that they play similarly, but management is comfortable with his floor point production and have faith that it can and will increase. Nico has a proven floor of 52 points (give or take) per 82 to start his career thanks to a bump from Taylor Hall and then showing he could reach that without Hall as well as a young player. So management has to feel "solid" about his floor and where his ceiling could end up as he matures.
Leadership wise, we're obviously not in the room, but on-ice, he's done everything he's been asked as a player and seemingly excelled as much as a young player on some bad teams can be expected to. He's a model of consistency in terms of effort and not taking dumb penalties. He's on the ice with a lead or protecting one. So for an extremely young team that will be full of a solid mix of North American and European/Russian players, I think Nico is the perfect choice as he is committed to the Devils long term and they likely feel safe about his floor as a player. |

I agree i would've liked Palmeri, Zajac or Subban as captain.
I definitely see Hughes wearing the C in the future. |

I would have also however I believe their longevity with the team (all three may not be here next year) was the deal breaker imho |

One *might* read into that as an indication of their long term status with the Devils.... |

Devils has an org has always been loyal to the vets sometimes to a fault. Giving Nico the captaincy shows that we're ready to make the youth a focus and build the team around them. All for them putting their faith in Nico as the future face of the franchise. |

The captain is not as Important as it once was. I feel the captain should be given to somebody who is respected by his teammates and leads by example they do not have to be the loudest on the team.
Nico works his ass off and plays the right way. I have no issue with him being the. captain. Not because he was a first overall pick because I would not consider Hughes as a captain any time soon.
Would Oalmeri or Zajac be a good choice for captain? Absolutely and I probably prefer Zajac for his dedication to this team. But neither one has term after this year therefore I do not believe they should be made captain for a half a season before they can walk. It doesn’t set a good precedent.
Lastly Nico is middle aged for this team (sort of joking) so it’s a good age for the captain. And I do not see Nico having an issue if Zajac Palmeri or Subban stand up to address the team as the assistants/veterans should support the captain. |

If we take another penalty we're losing this game. |

They should just tell the ref to flip a coin and save the 2 mins
The devils came out fast but haven't gotten anything going in the 2nd just seem a step slow |

Two long penalty kills back to back killed all the momentum and stopped them from rolling all four lines. plus I'm sure all of these games in a short period is hurting them too. Something needs to give because we can't be playing like this every night and expect to win. |

If Jack Hughes or our 4th line aren't on the ice I have very little faith something good will happen. |
